sandy has left her mark on the east coast. millions are spending another night without power. >> reporter: tonight officials are asking the public for patience as the work begins of preparing the damage from sandy. among the top priorities, restoring electricity and getting mass transit back on track. hurricane sandy hit new jersey's long beach island hard. homes in the beach front town were flooded or destroyed. boat littered the streets. >> we'll assess the damages and rebuild. that's way it works in new jersey. >> reporter: new york city was crippled bit storm. subway and traffic tunnels were filled with salt water. no word on when the city's famous subway service will resume. an entire community burned to the ground in queens as hurricane-force winds spread flames from house to house. for a second manhattan is a

tale of two cities. one of many destructive aftermaths of sandy's rampage. bullpen the disaster is also bringing out the best in people. the restaurant lost power, instead of letting the food go bad he cooked it up engave it away. >> cooking just like we normally would. >> reporter: the optimism to rebuild here and along the shore is the pain of what was lost. >> we'll rebuild it. no question in my mind. but for those of us who are my age, it won't by the same. it'll be different. because many of the iconic things that made it what it was are now gone and washed into the ocean. >> reporter: with the price tag in the tens of billions of dollars. another concern is cellular phone service. many towers in the storm zone are now operating with generators. who those run out of gas there will be no cell phone service.

reporting live in new york, i'm randall pinkston, back to you. >> it's hard to look at with so much devastation. it is almost impossible just to cover it all. >> we want to slow down and walk you through some of the areas that were the hardest hit. we'll start in new jersey where one resident said it was like someone turned on a giant faucet. all day police, fire and national guard crews pulled boat loads of people from flooded homes. >> i have a sliding door. trees toppled over. my bed was floating. >> within a matter of minutes i think where the basement got flooded. there's an apartment down there that's destroyed. and basically we're just waiting for this rescue. >> now making matters worse, the only fire station was also flooded. >> next, summerspoint, new

jersey. evacuated ahead of sandy. they knew what they were doing. it could be days before they're allowed to go back home. here's why. the storm surge filled the streets with water. some homes underwater. others simply knocked from their foundations. boats of all types washed ashore coming to rest on what was once dry land. a nearby pier with an amusement park, completely destroyed by the waves. new jersey state officials say entire beaches have disappeared. >> from one point to the other, 93 miles north it breezy point, new york. water was not the only force of nature. the beach community of breezy point, new york could only watch as an entire neighborhood burned. firefighter history to drag their water hoses through flooded streets as high winds pushed the flames from house to house. and the emotional toll could prove to be as high as the

financial one. >> it's just very upsetting. if anybody's out there, say your prayers for us. that's what you can do. >> anywhere from 80 to 100 homes burned in breezy point. a place many police and firefighters call home. once fire crews were able to get out into the flooded streets it didn't even matter. many of the fire hydrants were under 3 to 4 feet of water. >> then there's the symbol of civilization these days, the new york city subway system. seven tunnels linking manhattan to brooklyn and queens are flooded. the signals, switches, third rail, all covered with salt water and sludge. mta is calling it the biggest disaster the system as ever faced. plywood and sandbags were no match for the storm. >> there was no way to prepare that would have kept water out?

>> no. no way. how are you going to stop water. it goes where it wants to go. full to the top. >> crews are now pumping water around the clock trying to at least get those tunnel emptied out. new york says the bus almost will be operational by tomorrow and it will run for free until the subway is back up and running. it could be a while before things get back to normal at laguardia international. it looked more like a lake. with gates and runways completely submerged. the storm prompted thousands of flight cancellations. >> we'll take a one more look with a little perspective from a math class you may have taken years and years ago. remember number sequences? it's a sequence that can be

represented by a tiling square. you can create a spiral by drawing circular arcs. this gives you what's known as the golden spiral. it turns up in pine cones and nautilus shells. it turns up in weather. here hurricane sandy at landfall. the intersection of math and nature. causing a very big mess. >> it would take a historic storm to derail an historic presidential campaign. as tara merginer -- we're getting to that story in a minute. we want to go right now to get the latest on the weather from paul deanno. >> this is beginning to weaken as time moves on. here's a peek of what we have going on right now. one thing i want to point out, the white is snow that has been falling for the past 12 hours.

central pennsylvania, western maryland, west virginia, some areas could receive up to 36 inches of snow. the size of this still the cloud shield nearly 2000 miles from top to bottom. couple numbers i want to throw your way. 10inches of rainfall in the mid atlantic in many spots. 80miles per hour wind gusts. 13feet. this is hard to imagine. the highest tide in new york city history, i'm 6'4", that means if i'm standing on land in lower manhattan at one point in time yesterday the water would have been 7.5 feet above my head. i'll have your full forecast in a few minutes. >> crazy. the other big story we were going to talk about, the historic storm did not derail the historic presidential campaign entirely as tara merginer tells us, both candidates took time off the campaign trail to do their part.

>> reporter: president obama visited red cross headquarters in washington tuesday afternoon and spoke about the response to the storm. >> my message to the federal government. no bureaucracy, no red tape, get resources where they're needed as fast as possible, as hard as possible, and for the duration. >> reporter: working to put the recovery effort ahead of the impending elections, the president canceled his wednesday campaign trip to ohio. he'll see storm damage and thank first responders in new jersey instead. mitt romney was in ohio collecting money and relief supplies for storm victims. >> i appreciate your generosity. it's part of the american spirit, the american way to give to people who are in need. your generosity this morning touches my heart. >> reporter: from the white house president obama has been calling the governors of storm- ravaged states. one of romney's key supporters has been praising the president's leadership. >> cooperation has been great

here on the ground. and the cooperation from the president of the united states has been outstanding. he deserves great credit. >> reporter: while the president remains in washington he's getting help on the campaign trail from former president bill clinton. >> i have worked very hard in this election and i'm not running for anything. >> reporter: clinton was in minnesota tuesday, a state where the race is tightening. he's expected to campaign in six battleground states for president obama before election day. >> social media may hold the key to identifying whoever smashed a muni bus in the riots following the giants world series win. how facebook is turning up the heat on this viral vandal. elizabeth. >> reporter: they're doing sound checks here at civic center plaza. as they prepare for tomorrow's big giants parade, san francisco police department have made an arrest in connection with that picture that shows the ugly side of the

giants celebration on sunday. it may have something to do with a facebook campaign. the giants won the world series and a guy in a giants cap did this. >> sad. marred a great moment for us. >> reporter: jason couldn't believe a guy who supposedly is a giants fan would use what looks to be a barricade to smash a bus. >> it's pretty out there. it's pretty viral. >> reporter: the original picture was taken by the san francisco chronicle. but the owner of the red devil lounge wanted to help police catch the vandal. >> it seems like such an overt act of violence and disrespect to the city. it seemed like it was appropriate to put his picture up and say we wonder who this is. >> reporter: 18,000 reposts and countless likes and comments

later. >> there's a mob mentality of saying let's gets this guy. >> reporter: hoping this kind of violence doesn't affect tomorrow's giants parade. >> should be a happy time with people celebrating and celebrating with each other and not messing up property. >> reporter: we're expecting to hear with more about this recent arrest. earlier today the da said he plans to show no mercy when it comes to prosecuting those who were violent during the celebrations. the city attorney said he will sue anyone who damages city property. live in san francisco, elizabeth cook, cbs 5. >> that's not san francisco. that's not the way we behave. we're better than that. crews are putting the finishing touches on tomorrow's parade for the giants world series title. about a million people are expected to swarm the city for the parade. bart expecting record

cbs 5 reporter linda yee on the empire going all hollywood. >> reporter: it's a force even the toughest storm trooper can't defeat. disney is guiding the star ship in a $4 billion deal that includes lucasfilms. in a company video statement, george lucas said he's putting away his light saber and trusting the house of mickey mouse to take over. >> i realize at some point i needed to retire. i wanted to go on and do other things. the final block was to find a good solid home for the company. >> reporter: lucas employs up to 1400 people here at campus in san francisco. lucasfilm employees did meet with lucas as well as top management all afternoon to discuss their future. by night fall three bus loads

well, the checks coming in the mail for thousands of blue shield customers. as juliet goodrich, the nonprofit just made too much money. >> reporter: after receiving criticism, health insurer blue shield of california is giving back to the tune of $50 million to customers. >> putting affordability before profit. we think it's important to try to make it more affordable and returning $50 million to our customers by the end of the year is proof that we're continuing to fulfill our 2% pledge promise. >> reporter: here's how it works. blue shield says all of its customers will receive the credit by december. her individual $25 credit. for a family of four $75, depending on premiums. for most employers the company says the average credit will be

he was b check this out. a close call for one california surfer. he was bitten by a shark in hum bolt bay today. you can see the shark took a giant bite-shaped chunk out of his surfboard. he had four to five serious gashes from his chest to his hip. >> we hopped on him right away. another guy happened to be an emt basically used our body weight to hold everything in and make sure he wasn't bleeding too bad. >> that's the shark's playground. the surfer was rushed to the hospital. he is expected to survive. last week a surfer was killed by a great white off the santa barbara county coast. >> nba tips off. a's are back in the news. it's good news.
